If you’re just getting started online, you’ve probably seen systeme.io and Kit come up again and again.

Both have free plans, and both let you build a list and sell things. But they’re built around different ideas. systeme.io is an all-in-one platform: funnels, email, courses, a blog and more, in one account. Kit is email-first. It’s built around your list, your newsletter and selling simple digital products.

I’ve gone through both platforms’ own pricing pages, help centres and terms. Every price and feature below links to where I found it.

A quick, honest note: Some links on this site may be affiliate links. If you sign up through one, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. I’ve stuck to what each platform’s own pages say and tried to keep this fair.

I’ve been writing on and off for about three years, mostly for my jobs. Lately I’ve started thinking about writing for myself, and that led me to newsletters. When I searched for a clear comparison written for people just starting out, I couldn’t find much, so I wrote the one I wanted to read. I’ve used Kit, but that was a while back, so everything about Kit here comes from its current pages. I haven’t used systeme.io, so everything about it comes from its own pages.

The quick verdict

Pick systeme.io if you want to sell a course or a product from your own sales pages, and you’d rather not pay for five separate tools. Its free plan includes funnels, a course, a blog and payments, with no transaction fees from systeme.io.

Pick Kit if your main thing is an email newsletter, and you want lots of room to grow for free. Kit’s free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers, and you can sell digital products and paid subscriptions from day one.

Pricing and fees

systeme.io

systeme.io has four plans, and they’re mostly split by how many contacts you have systeme.io:

  • Free: $0. 2,000 contacts, 3 sales funnels, 1 blog, 1 course with up to 500 students, 1 affiliate program for your own products, and 1 custom domain.
  • Startup: $17/month. 5,000 contacts, 10 sales funnels, 10 automation rules, 3 custom domains and 5 courses.
  • Webinar: $47/month. 10,000 contacts, 50 sales funnels, 100 automation rules, 10 custom domains, 20 courses, plus evergreen webinars.
  • Unlimited: $97/month. Unlimited contacts, funnels, automation rules, courses and custom domains.

Every plan comes with unlimited email sends, unlimited sub-accounts and 0% transaction fees systeme.io. Paying yearly gets you “2 months free,” and the free plan doesn’t need a credit card systeme.io.

The free plan has a few limits worth knowing up front:

  • You get 1 automation rule and 1 email campaign systeme.io.
  • Free accounts with no login or activity for 6 months are deactivated systeme.io.
  • There’s a lifetime sales limit of $10,000 USD. A warning shows up at $8,000. Once you hit the limit, you get 3 days to upgrade, or your payment pages stop taking new sales. Affiliate commissions don’t count toward it systeme.io help, systeme.io terms.
  • You can’t remove the “Sent with systeme.io” line from your emails or the affiliate badge from your pages. That needs a paid plan systeme.io help, systeme.io help.

What happens if you go over your limits? On a paid plan, you get warning emails for 3 days. If you’re still over on day 4, you’re moved up to the next plan automatically systeme.io terms. On the free plan, your account is restricted instead. Opt-ins and payments stop, and email campaigns pause, until you upgrade or trim back systeme.io help.

One more thing: systeme.io’s subscription plans aren’t refundable systeme.io terms. You can cancel any time, and you keep your plan until the next billing date before you drop back to free systeme.io.

Kit

Kit has three plans Kit:

  • Free: $0, up to 10,000 subscribers. Unlimited landing pages, forms and email broadcasts, tagging, and selling digital products and subscriptions Kit help.
  • Creator: from $39/month at up to 1,000 subscribers Kit help. Billed yearly, it’s $390, which works out to $33/month Kit.
  • Pro: from $79/month at up to 1,000 subscribers Kit help. Right now Kit is showing a limited-time first-year offer on yearly Pro, $593 for the first year Kit.

Prices go up as your list grows Kit help. You can try Creator or Pro free for 14 days with no card, and there are no sending limits on any plan Kit.

The big catch on Kit’s free plan is automation. Visual automations and email sequences need a paid plan Kit help. So on free, you can send newsletters, but you can’t set up an automatic welcome series.

If Kit isn’t for you, it offers a refund within the first 30 days of signing up Kit.

The fee on your sales

This is where the two really differ.

systeme.io says it takes 0% transaction fees, and you can take payments through Stripe or PayPal “at no extra cost” systeme.io. You connect your own Stripe account to it systeme.io help. systeme.io’s pages don’t list Stripe’s or PayPal’s own fees, so check those on their sites before you price anything.

Kit charges 3.5% + 30¢ per sale, and that includes card processing. Kit says its own share is 0.6% of that Kit.

Setting up

I haven’t set up a systeme.io account, so the setup steps below come from each platform’s official pages.

With systeme.io, you build sales funnels: a series of pages like an opt-in page, a sales page, an order form and a thank-you page systeme.io help.

To send email from systeme.io, you need to authenticate your own domain. It’s mandatory, and you can’t use a Gmail or Yahoo address for this. The domain also needs a working website on it systeme.io help. If you don’t have a domain yet, budget for one.

Kit is simpler to picture. You make a form or landing page, people sign up, and you send them emails. Every plan includes unlimited landing pages and forms, templates, and a newsletter site Kit. You can use a free Kit domain or connect your own Kit.

Both offer help moving over from another tool. systeme.io lists free migration systeme.io, and Kit lists free migrations too Kit.

Growth tools

systeme.io gives you the pieces to build your own system: opt-in pages, a blog, automation rules and workflows, A/B tests, and your own affiliate program so other people can promote your products systeme.io. Remember the free plan only has 1 automation rule, so you’ll outgrow it quickly if you want a lot of automatic steps.

Kit leans on its Creator Network. On the free plan, you get five Smart Recommendation slots, and other creators can recommend your newsletter to their readers. Paid plans get priority, so you’re featured more often after you upgrade Kit help. A newsletter referral system through SparkLoop is a Pro-only feature Kit.

Ways to make money

systeme.io is made for selling. You can sell courses, course bundles, community access, paid calendar events and physical products systeme.io help. It has 1-click upsells, order bumps and coupons systeme.io. For physical products, you handle the shipping yourself systeme.io help.

Kit keeps things closer to your newsletter. Every plan, free included, lets you sell digital products and recurring subscriptions, run a paid newsletter and set up tip jars Kit. On Creator and Pro, you can also earn from Paid Recommendations, where Kit’s fee is 23.5%, and from newsletter sponsorships Kit.

I haven’t started selling anything yet, so I don’t have a strong take on ads versus selling your own products. My newsletters are still growing.

Notes for Canadian creators

Here’s what I could find on each platform’s own pages.

Currency. systeme.io’s plan prices are in US dollars systeme.io, systeme.io terms. When you sell, you pick a currency for each funnel systeme.io help, and Stripe card payments through systeme.io support CAD systeme.io help. Kit’s prices are shown in US dollars too Kit. Canada is one of the countries you can sell from on Kit, and CAD is a supported currency Kit help. The fee in CAD is 3.5% + $0.30 Kit help.

The $10,000 cap. If you sell in Canadian dollars on systeme.io’s free plan, your sales are converted to USD to count toward the $10,000 limit, and exchange rates can change when you hit it systeme.io terms.

Sales tax. Kit collects VAT only. Other taxes, including Canada’s QST, aren’t charged or collected for you Kit help. systeme.io can add VAT at checkout, based on the buyer’s country for digital products systeme.io help, systeme.io help. Neither platform’s pages I read explain GST/HST for Canadian sellers. Please check with the platform, and with the CRA or an accountant, before you start selling.

Who you’re dealing with. systeme.io’s terms name ITACWT Limited, a company incorporated under Irish law, and say Irish law applies systeme.io terms. Kit’s terms name Kit Inc., an Idaho corporation Kit terms.

Owning and exporting your list

You should always be able to take your list with you. Both platforms let you.

On systeme.io, you select your contacts and export them. A CSV file is emailed to you, and the download is only available for 3 days systeme.io help.

On Kit, you can export your list as a CSV too. The download link expires after five days Kit help. Kit’s terms say you keep all rights to the content you put on Kit Kit terms.

If you cancel a paid systeme.io plan, your contacts, funnels and courses aren’t deleted, but your account is restricted if you’re over the free limits systeme.io. On Kit, if you go back to free, anything you built stays in your account, but automations and sequences stop running Kit help.

Who should pick which

systeme.io is a good fit if you:

  • want to sell a course, coaching call or product from your own sales pages
  • want to keep more of each sale, with no transaction fee from the platform
  • have, or are happy to buy, your own domain for sending email

Kit is a good fit if you:

  • mostly want to write a newsletter and grow it
  • expect to pass 2,000 subscribers before you’re ready to pay
  • want to sell a simple digital product or paid newsletter without building funnels

Maybe wait or think twice if you need automatic welcome emails on day one and don’t want to pay yet. Kit’s free plan has no sequences, and systeme.io’s free plan has just 1 automation rule and 1 email campaign Kit help, systeme.io.

FAQ

Is systeme.io or Kit cheaper for a brand-new creator?

Both start free. Kit’s free plan holds more subscribers, 10,000 versus 2,000 Kit, systeme.io. When you do pay, systeme.io Startup is $17/month for 5,000 contacts systeme.io, while Kit Creator starts at $39/month for up to 1,000 subscribers Kit help.

Does either one take a cut of my sales?

systeme.io says 0% transaction fees on every plan, but your payment processor’s own fees still matter, so check Stripe’s or PayPal’s pricing systeme.io. Kit charges 3.5% + 30¢ per sale, card processing included Kit.

Do I need my own domain?

For sending email from systeme.io, yes. Domain authentication is mandatory systeme.io help. Kit lets you use a free Kit domain for your pages, or connect your own Kit.

Can I switch later?

Yes. Both let you export your list as a CSV systeme.io help, Kit help, and both list free migrations systeme.io, Kit.

My honest take

If you already know you want to sell a course or product, systeme.io gives you a lot for free, and it doesn’t take a cut. Just keep the $10,000 cap and the 1 automation rule in mind.

If you want to start writing to people and grow a list, Kit’s free plan gives you plenty of room. You’ll probably want to upgrade once you’re ready for a welcome sequence.

My advice? Pick the one that matches what you want to do in the next three months, not three years. Send your first email this week. You can always move later, and your list comes with you.
